I’ve never tasted alcohol – John Paintsil Shares His Secret to Success

Ghanaian football legend John Paintsil recently shared a key factor that contributed to his long and successful career: self-discipline and a commitment to abstain from alcohol. Paintsil, a mainstay of the Black Stars for over a decade, earned 89 caps and played in multiple Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments. He was also part of Ghana’s historic squad that qualified for the country’s first FIFA World Cup in 2006 and played in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Paintsil’s career spanned 15 years, including time in prestigious leagues like England’s Premier League, where he played for West Ham United and Fulham. He also had short stints with Israeli team Hapoel Tel Aviv and South African club Maritzburg United.

In a recent interview with Angel TV, Paintsil explained his decision to abstain from alcohol, connecting it to a childhood experience that had a lasting impact. “I saw the father of one of my friends lying in the gutter after he got drunk, and I asked my father why he was in that situation. My father explained that it was because he was drunk,” Paintsil recalled.

This incident led Paintsil to make a firm commitment to himself: never to consume alcohol. “I made a promise to myself that I was never going to drink alcohol, and to date, I have never tasted alcohol,” Paintsil affirmed.

He stressed the importance of self-discipline, especially in the face of temptations and excesses that often accompany success. “There comes a time in life when you are able to afford all the things you want, but you need to be self-disciplined,” Paintsil asserted.
