Thomas Partey asked to be removed from Black Stars squad – GFA

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has provided clarification regarding Thomas Partey’s absence from the latest Black Stars squad announced by new coach Otto Addo.

According to the GFA, the 30-year-old midfielder requested to be excused from the squad selection as he continues to focus on regaining full fitness following recurring injuries. This explanation comes after Partey was noticeably absent from the squad list released ahead of the international friendlies against Nigeria and Uganda.

The upcoming matches will see the Black Stars facing Nigeria in Marrakesh, Morocco on March 22, followed by a game against Uganda on March 26 as part of their warm-up preparations.

Speculation arose regarding Partey’s omission from Ghana’s squad, prompting the GFA to address the matter directly. In their statement, the GFA clarified that the midfielder himself requested to be excluded from the squad as he works on recovering from recent injuries.

Partey recently returned to action for Arsenal, featuring in their notable 6-0 victory against Sheffield United in the Premier League. Making a cameo appearance as a second-half substitute, he played a vital role in Arsenal’s commanding win. However, his minutes on the pitch have been managed cautiously as he continues his journey towards full fitness.

While Partey made another substitute appearance against Brentford in the Premier League, he was an unused substitute in Arsenal’s Champions League round of 16 second-leg match against Porto.

In addition to Partey’s absence, Ghana’s squad for the friendlies against Nigeria and Uganda includes several new faces. Among them are goalkeepers Frederick Asare and David Akologo, as well as an Ivory Coast-born midfielder.

Although some familiar names such as Mohammed Kudus, Jordan Ayew, and Andre Ayew are included in the squad, there are also returning players like Abdul Fatawu Issahaku.

Overall, the Black Stars squad for the upcoming friendlies reflects a blend of experience and fresh talent as they prepare for their international fixtures. With Partey focusing on his fitness and new additions to the team, Ghana aims to make a strong impression in their upcoming matches.
